The history of the group began with the instrumental outfit, The Nite-Liters , which was originally formed in in Louisville, Kentucky by Tony Churchill and Harvey Fuqua. In , Vernon Bullock had thought of creating an ensemble of groups for a touring company and Harvey Fuqua and Tony Churchill soon took an interest. The band came together in with their self-titled debut on RCA. By the time the song hit the stores, however, Ann had left to devote time to her family, leaving Londee Loren as the only female member. When Fuqua reportedly could not get the performance he wanted out of Londee on their next hit, " Until It's Time for You to Go ", it featured, instead of the group members, future Supremes member Susaye Greene as lead vocalist, with Fuqua and Carolyn Willis of Honey Cone doing the spoken intro. However, Londee more than met the challenge in live performances and her voice matured on future releases.

August 1, Center Stage Atlanta, Georgia. Fuqua liked the concept, so the pair traveled to Louisville, KY to start a production company and audition new talent. They would sign new acts, which would be recorded separately, but collectively the acts would be known as "New Birth. The first incarnation consisted of an 8 member band called the Nite-Liters; a male quartet called The Now Sound; The Mint Juleps, a quartet of female singers; and lead singer Alan Frey. The first single, "It's You or No One" was not a smash hit. But a spark was missing in the vocals.
James Shelby Baker b. New Birth were formed in with some assistance from music-industry veteran Harvey Fuqua. Originally the concept was the brainchild of Vernon Bullock.
