Nothing new about being told off, as even liberal Berlin, to which I recently moved, is full of baffling rules. For the Germans, this is as normal as a trip to the supermarket. As in Scandinavia, saunas are revered here for their relaxing effects, circulatory benefits and power to make you sweat a pint in 10 minutes. They are also mixed-sex, and no bathing suits are allowed. A nude mixed sauna is a shocking proposition to an Anglo-American like me. It is also an intriguing one. The pictures online showed a smart, spa-like space of minimalist wood, turquoise tiles and people in luxuriant robes. I assumed this would be a soft introduction to bare-cheeked baking. I had expected at least the people in reception to be wearing clothes.

If it is mixed is it ok to wear swimwear or have you got to go naked? I wore swimwear as I was uncomfortable with the idea of going in the buff. When i stayed here, i used the spa daily and i was told not to wear bathing suit in sauna, for hygienic reasons. That was fine by me.
The thing goes like this: Whenever I am talking to someone about Finland or the Finnish sauna for the first time, it is almost guaranteed that they will ask me, in confidence, if the sex in the sauna thing is actually real. There are questions about if it is a good place to do it, if it is sexy, if everyone does it…. There are 3 types of sauna in Finland albeit many strange ones. To make the 90 degree Celsius sauna a bit more humid, you have to throw some water over hot stones. That will bring the heat up.
